Summary:"Who today still remembers Uruguay as a host country for refugees from the National Socialist regime? How did it come about that around 800 Jewish Austrians escaped to Montevideo from March 1938? And how did they fare when they started over in South America? Around 800 Austrians, almost all of Jewish origin, sought rescue in Uruguay after the 'Anschluss' in March 1938. Given the choice, most would have preferred to flee to the USA if it had to be America. They knew nothing about Uruguay, the small country on the Rio de la Plata, but they had no choice - the main thing was to get away. They tried to get by in the capital Montevideo, some moved on, many stayed. In Austria they predominantly belonged to a bourgeois and entrepreneurial middle class. The younger ones in particular managed to work their way back up. Uruguay expanded in the 1940s, and those expelled from the German Reich took advantage of the favorable environment and contributed to modernization themselves."--
