Summary:Malka Pukhraj, 1912-2004, an eminent singer of Pakistan, was born in Jammu (present day India) to a musical family. At the age of nine, she performed at the coronation ceremony of Maharaja Hari Singh; ruler of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, who was so impressed by her voice that he appointed her as a court singer. She was well-known professional singer of India in the 1940s and after the Partition in 1947, she migrated to Pakistan, where she received much more fame, through her performances at Radio Pakistan, Lahore. In 1977, when All India Radio, for which she sang until the Partition in 1947, was celebrating its Golden Jubilee, she was invited to India and was awarded with the Legend of Voice Award. In 1980, she received the highest civilian award; the Pride of Performance Award from the President of Pakistan.
