Summary:Michael Collins was a charismatic leader in Ireland's struggle for independence from British rule and came to realize that compromise was the key to peace. Most of his former colleagues disagreed and on August 22, 1922, he was gunned down in an ambush. It is not known who was ultimately behind the attack that ended his life.
