Summary:This video explores the elements of 17th century Baroque dance, charting the historical preservation of dance, from the academic page to its transformation into a vibrant performance. For this we can thank France's Louis XIV. An excellent dancer, he ordered the invention of a notation system for dance to teach, codify, and spread this art. This film examines one dance, "Folies d'Espagne," selected because it features short highly expressive variations--each with its own temperament--to inspire the choreography. During the course of this video, the creative process of researching, reconstructing, re-creating, and performing a Baroque dance is fully explored. Includes full performances of Pecourt & Feuillet's "Les folies d'Espagne pour homme" (1704) and Feuillet's "Les folies d'Espagne pour femme" (1700), both attempting to be as historically accurate as possible.
