Summary:India is fast becoming the world's back office. Major British companies including BT, Prudential and Norwich Union are transferring jobs to India where the workforce is highly educated, highly motivated and, crucially, cheap. Call centres have moved from Birmingham to Mumbai, where employees adopt English names to connect with their UK-based customers. But what effect has this mass migration of jobs to the sub-continent, or 'offshoring', had on the UK workforce and how will it be affected in the future if this practice continues?
