| Summary: | First the sound of Miles Davis' trumpet before his face appears on screen and the orchestra enters, and the magic begins. We can only encourage our readers to view this cult 26-minute recording which was made on April 2, 1959 as part of a program designed by TV producer Robert Herridge. The program, originally entitled The Sound Of Miles Davis and broadcast on July 21, 1960, is a pure masterpiece and remains the mark of one of the most beautiful adventures in jazz, the one that sealed the collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans. So What, the title that opens the program, had been recorded a month earlier for the album Kind Of Blue with Bill Evans on the piano; for the occasion of this TV program, the pianist is Wynton Kelly and the orchestra is that of Gil Evans. Miles Davis takes two solos, the second replacing that of the bedridden Cannonball Adderley. John Coltrane's explosively beautiful solo seems to fascinate Miles, who listens intently backstage. For the three tracks that follow, the quintet steps aside to let the dialogue between Miles and the orchestra flourish; Coltrane, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb blend into the orchestra. The Duke, Blues For Pablo, and New Rhumba had been recorded in 1957 and were part of the tracklist for the Miles Ahead album. In this "live" performance, they keep their emotional power intact.
