These two documents, the proceedings of a meeting of the Bar in Pierce County, and the minutes and resolutions of a mass meeting of citizens, record local reaction to the declaration of martial law by Governor Stevens and the arrest of Chief Justice Lander and his clerk in May 1856.
"First salvo against Stevens and his actions constraining the court of the Territory by the use of the militia. The whole issue is of vital importance to the history of the early Territory, involving the conflict between whites and Indians, powers of the judiciary, and the para-military rule of Governor Stevens."--Bookseller's note.
