Summary:	Coit made drawings during his travels as a merchant. He spent business time in South America and in Europe. Coit reached California in 1849 at the start of the Gold Rush. His letters and sketches were some of the earliest views of San Francisco at that time. In 1852 he returned to Connecticut.
