| Summary: | Animal experimentation is a perenially controversial topic, and access to a balanced range of information is vital if there is to be constructive debate about issues on which people hold very different views. The British Library is ideally placed to provide such a service. Drawing on its vast collections in science, history, philosophy, ethics, and the social sciences, this book reviews the spectrum of scientific, lobby group, and public opinion on the use of animals in research; traces the development and continuing evolution of UK and EU legislation and regulation; reviews laboratory animal welfare issues and the development of alternatives to animal use; and looks at the issues raised by new technological developments such as genetic modification.
