Summary: | Animal experimentation is a perennially controversial topic, and access to a balanced range of information is vital if there is to be constructive debate about issues on which people hold very different views. This volume seeks to offer such a service. Drawing on the vast collection of the British Library in science, history, philosophy, ethics and the social sciences, the book reviews the spectrum of scientific, pressure group and public opinion on the use of animals in research; traces the development and continuing evolution of UK and EU legislation and regulation; reviews laboratory animal welfare issues and the development of alternatives to animal use; and looks at the issues raised by new technological developments such as genetic modification. A directory section gives access to key UK organizations and Internet sites which are particularly useful as sources of further information. |
