Psychologists Clarke-Stewart (Univ. of California, Irvine) and Brentano (Chapman Univ.) present a balanced, direct, engaging, and comprehensive overview of the complex divorce literature. They cover a range of topics, including risk factors for divorce, the effects of divorce on adults and children, factors that help children adjust to divorce, child custody and support, and life after divorce. Most impressive is the authors' success in presenting controversial topics in an unbiased manner. Eschewing politically charged debate, they discuss the state of divorce research and respectfully highlight consistencies and inconsistencies without trying to promote a particular position. Policy makers, researchers, teachers, students, and especially parents will find this book to be an invaluable resource. Readers will especially appreciate summaries at the end of each chapter. ^BSumming Up: Essential. All readers; all levels. T. Edwards University of San Diego
