The 2nd work (originally for flute, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello and piano) " ... based upon a two-part 'ballata' of the 14th-century composer Francesco Landini ..."--Program notes. The original Landini piece is played both before and after the sextet.
The 3rd work inspired by Théophile Gautier's collection of poetry, Emaux et Camées (Paris, 1859) ; The 4th work based on Theodore Roethke's poem The long waters.
