Summary:	British Columbia is facing ongoing challenges in providing historic levels of production and employment opportunities based on a model of commodity production from the forest industry. Like many jurisdictions and other industries, it is seeking to expand value-added, or what we term secondary manufacturing in wood products. Given the significance of forestry to British Columbia, it is important that decision-makers seeking to promote an expansion in secondary manufacturing have accurate information. This report presents the results of a survey of the British Columbia secondary manufacturing wood industry for 2006. The survey gathered operational, employment, production, marketing and financial information on nine business types, with supplemental information added for a tenth, firms producing panelboards. The information is analyzed to provide both a quantitative and qualitative picture of the current structure and significance of secondary manufacturing, and sector trends through comparison to previous surveys. Overall, the size of the sector is similar to what it was in the last survey conducted for 1999, but the relative economic contribution has shifted away from remanufacturing and towards engineered wood products and cabinets, both business types which contribute to the strong domestic building boom in British Columbia.
