Summary:Artistic experimentation with abstract forms still poses a great challenge for art connoisseurs and cultural critics in Puerto Rico. This book by Professor Nelson Rivera, an expert in the political art of the 20th century, approaches the subject through the analysis of criticism of abstraction in the paintings of contemporary artists such as Raquel Rivera, Myrna Báez and Antonio Martorell. The author extends the controversy on the supposed moral obligation of the artist to reflect the Puerto Rican identity "as it is" to artistic forms - such as photography, sculpture and dance - that destabilize this rigid proposal. His emphasis is on the description of the art in question and its non-traditional proposals, as well as challenging the clichs that for decades have been an impediment to the deep appreciation that experimental art on the island merits.
