Summary:Major study with an original approach on the life and art of José Pedro Costigliolo (b. Montevideo, Uruguay, 1902 - 1985) one of the most important representatives of geometric art in Uruguay during the decades of the 1940's and 1950's -upon Torres García's return to the country- and after having exhausted the Naturalistic, Impressionist and Expressionist Movements. The book analyses the origins of Geometric art in Europe and its projection in South America, highlighting the local and peculiar characteristics of this modernist aesthetic movement through a comprehensive research of the vast artwork of Costigliolo and unveiling unknown and forgotten aspects regarding his experiences with murals and graphic arts. The book gathers for the first time in one volume the complete art production of Costigliolo, presently held in private and public collections in Uruguay and aboard: Art Museum of the Americas, (Washington, DC); Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin; The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), (Miami, FL); Museo de Arte Moderno de Rio de Janeiro, (Brazil); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofa, (Madrid, Spain); University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art, (Colchester, United Kingdom). This bilingual edition includes a profuse photographic, historic, biographic and bibliographic documentation as well as an interview with painter and sculptor María Freire, the artist's wife and artistic collaborator.
