Summary:Born in Bengal in 1810 but educated in England, Richardson had a military career in India before migrating to New Zealand where he became politically active. The father of two bright daughters, it was largely due to his advocacy that the University of Otago opened its doors to women. Richardson was progressive on Maori land issues and in the 1870s was commissioner inquiring into British and Maori accounts of the wars.
