Summary:The collection of art of the Governmental Palaces of Sao Paulo is one of the most important in Brazil The present edition documents and comments by leading authorities on the art collection in custody in the 3 city halls (Palacios do Governo) throughout the state of Sao Paulo, while also examines the facts and policies established for their of acquisition and preservation. The city halls of the state of Sao Paulo have initiated the mission of documenting, preserving and divulging the close to 3500 works of art from diverse time periods and regions of Brazil and other places in the world that have been part of their decorative settings, from the first Government Palace or "Pátio do Colégio" to the 19th century and ending in the 1930's when the administrative function moved to the Palácio dos Campos Elíseos, and later to the buildings known as the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the Palácio do Horto, in Sao Paulo, and the Palácio Boa Vista, in Campos do Jordo. This large art collection includes colonial sacred art works as well as artwork by celebrated artists such as: Anita Malfatti, Vicente do Rego Monteiro, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Tarsila do Amaral, Cándido Portinari, Alfredo Volpi, Tomie Ohtake, Franz Krajcberg and many others.
