This is a thoroughly rewritten and updated introductory book on the nature and activity of volcanoes with emphasis on interaction with human activities. Ollier is an international authority on volcanoes. The subject is vast and complexly interrelated with equally important subjects, but Ollier condenses the subject admirably into its most important critical aspects, and produces a first-rate introductory textbook for undergraduate students with geological and geographical, and also environmental science, interests. Highlighted are volcanic activity and human history, types of eruptions, types and forms of volcanoes, eruptive products, hydrology and erosion in volcanic areas, and volcanic settings. The text is sprinkled with very well chosen references, the bibliography is excellent, and numerous illustrations are outstanding for their force, simplicity, and appropriateness. The various subjects are covered in balance, from a perspective ideal for the beginning student, and in degree of detail and difficulty. This book should be in all libraries. T. L. T.
