Summary:Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) is one of the most important artists of the twentieth century and is considered one of the pioneers of German expressionism. Her work is characterized by a strong commitment to the earthly matter. This manifests itself in sometimes crusty paint surfaces and a strong desire for basic primitive forms. But what makes her artistry surpass that of many contemporaries is its ability to evoke emotions in paint, shape and color even after a hundred years. Shortly before 1900 Paula Modersohn-Becker was drawn to the northern German village of Worpswede. The many paintings she made of the area and its inhabitants form the basis of this catalog .
