The tragicomedy follows the lives of four couples, all in their twenties or thirties, who live on a communal farm in the wake of the social and political tumult of May 1968 in France. The various people-- including an unorthodox history professor, a trade unionist, a disillusioned journalist turned gambler, a secretary captivated by tantric sex, a rural worker and his factory-worker wife, and a supermarket cashier who gives away food-- are all trying, in different ways, to maintain the ideals of May 1968 and to find alternatives to capitalism.
