Summary:"Eyre rolls record proceedings before itinerant judges who at regular intervals during the thirteenth century presided over sessions in every English county to hear and determine the crown and civil pleas that had arisen since the previous visitation. Following on from notable editions of the crown and civil pleas of the 1249 eyre already published by the Wiltshire Record Society, the crown pleas of 1268 edited in this volume record the acts of violence and disorder, and also the cases of local maladministration, which were allegedly perpetrated in Wilshire since 1256. They illustrate the methods whereby a developing criminal justice system was applied in the shires, and show how central and local government interacted during the turbulent period of the Barons' Wars" -- Book jacket.
