Summary: | Celeste, a French black woman, works as a computer typist for a bank and becomes curious about the reality behind the figures. Ruby is a beauty who is passed from one man to another as the quintessential belle of the ball. The two women go in search of gold and the concept of the heroine. Director Sally Potter considers the film "a musical describing a female quest." The work raises questions concerning "the connections between gold, money and women; about the illusion of female powerlessness; about imagery in the unconscious and its relationship to the power of the cinema." Made by an all-woman crew, the film combines "epic adventure, cinematic puns, and avant garde musical comedy, with the striking images of a changing Icelandic landscape." (Circulates).
